Locomotor Skills Cards

At the beginning of the year locomotor movements are important skills to teach and practice. Students learn how to perform these movements, but also practicing them help students to develop good spatial awareness. They are also a great tools for future lessons. It can be used in a warm-up routine. One example for that is a lap-style warm-up in which children run each segment of a lap in a different way - placing the card on a cone to help with directions.



Another way to use locomotor skills is with this video. It can be used as a warm-up or a cool down activity and it can also be used during a dance unit. Primary and Lower Elementary students love to move with this one:


I have created these locomotor cards using the site canva.com. I think it is helpful to have a visualization for young students of the activity they are doing, as well as tying it with the literacy in a simple clean card.
