There are many ways to pair-up students in P.E. I try to avoid telling students who they should work with and find creative ways for them to find new partners while getting excited about it. This video demonstrates five ways I help students find a partner in P.E.
I also created 12 different movement cards for students to use. Students get a card and hide it from their peers. Then, when all have a card, they act like the animal on that card while trying to find someone acting like them. Once they find their matching card, they partner up for the next activity. This way students get excited about finding their partner and bring a positive attitude to the next activity with their new partner.
The inspiration was a Montessori work of matching an image of a real-life animal to its shadow. Here is the link to purchase the cards: Etsy Store/ Movement Cards.
5 ways to group students in P.E.:
Pass bracelets while students are standing in a row (I use this the most when I have a big group and I need multiple groups). To buy bracelets on Amazon, click on the link: https://amzn.to/479baYN (Paid Link.)
Ask students to partner up and have one of the kneel. Kneeling student are one group, and standing students are the other.
Instruct students to find a partner that was born in the same month as them. Or one month close to it. Watch students make connections!
Prepare the environment by setting colorful dots on the ground. Students will be grouped according to their dot.
Activity cards- move like the animal on your card and find another student that moves like you.
