How to Play Foursquare?

Writer's picture: Merry KatzMerry Katz

One of the games we practice at the beginning of the year in P.E. is Foursquare. Practicing hitting the ball underhand, moving towards the ball, and bouncing & catching a ball are a few of the skills we practice with lower elementary classes (1st-3rd grade). Working on rules, sportsmanship, and problem-solving are a few of the skills we discuss with our older students, upper elementary age (3rd-6th grade). Adding variations to the game, and allowing students to be creative is a great add-on as students master the skills of the game.

I found that hanging a poster on the wall helps students self-monitor the game. Arguments are shorter and so is the need for teacher's interference.

This is the reason I created this poster.

As Montessori teachers, we want to encourage students to solve their own disagreements. We want to see them practice leadership, cooperation, and sportsmanship. As Montessori said: "The greatest sign of success for a teacher...is to be able to say, "The children are now working as if I did not exist."
